Environmental responsiveness needed to support SDG initiatives through packaging
Demand for environmentally friendly packaging has been increasing in step with concerns over the impact that excessive packaging and plastic products have on the environment. However, “environmentally friendly” can mean many things, and approaches vary, from reducing CO2 emissions in manufacturing processes to reducing plastic materials and using easy-to-recycle materials. As a comprehensive packaging manufacturer, The Pack proposes environmental specifications best suited to the customer, drawing on our manufacturing know-how and diverse product lineup.
Promoting development of eco products and use of FSC®
certified materials
The Pack conducts research and development on environmental performance from the standpoints of materials, design, and technology. Examples of materials in actual application include non-wood bagasse paper, which is created using the residue of crushed sugarcane plants, and FSC®-certified materials, which are made from appropriately managed forest products. In design, we have integrated box lids and bodies to reduce lid folds, thereby conserving resources. These are just a few examples of the various environmental measures we’ve adopted.
Environmental considerations in business activities and manufacturing processes
We ascertain the environmental impact of our business activities and production activities and work to reduce this impact by reducing CO2 emissions and waste discharge through energy-saving activities and the installation of high-efficiency devices. In 2006, we acquired ISO 14001 certification at all production plants and business sites in Japan, engaging in environmental management throughout the company.
Post-use recycling initiatives
Packaging is generally thrown away after it has served its purpose, but The Pack is conducting initiatives to recover and recycle used paper bags and packaging. Like the recycling programs for milk cartons and food trays often seen at supermarkets, we work to recover used paper bags and packaging and recycle it. Recycling used packaging also serves to reduce our environmental impact.
Forest conservation activities to protect primary resources
Through the activities of The Pack Forest Environment Fund, a portion of the sales of non-wood paper and other environmentally friendly products are used to fund forest conservation activities conducted on commission by the non-profit Eco Future Fund. Our employees also participate as volunteers and conduct activities in collaboration with NPOs and local community members.
